Maldivian President Mohammad Muizzu accused the country’s opposition and the lender of Maldives of colluding in a “financial coup” aimed at overthrowing his government. The crisis in the Maldives began over the weekend when the lender of Maldives suspended foreign transactions and reduced customers’ loan limits, affecting international payments and online foreign transactions. The lender defended its actions, saying it was struggling to meet demands. However, Muizzu dismissed these claims, alleging that the lender’s directors are aligned with the opposition and are conspiring to destabilise his government. In response, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rejected Muizzu’s accusations, calling it as “distraction”.
